Stanley W. Ashley, MD, has been appointed to the position of chief medical officer at BWH, and O’Neil A. Britton, MD, has accepted the position of chief medical officer at Faulkner Hospital. Both appointments are effective June 1.
“Both Dr. Ashley and Dr. Britton are highly respected leaders both within and outside the BW/F community,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. “I am confident that they will help position Brigham and Women’s and Faulkner Hospitals for even greater success, ensuring that we maintain the quality for which we are known as we venture forward to face the new and pressing health care challenges ahead.”
Ashley has served as Frank Sawyer Professor and vice chair of the Department of Surgery and program director of the General Surgery Residency at BWH since 1997.
“A leader by example, he has distinguished himself as thoughtful, articulate and fair,” Nabel said. “He is a gifted surgeon and an inspiring teacher and mentor.”
Ashley’s research, which examines the pathophysiology of the small bowel and pancreas, has been funded by both the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Institutes of Health. He has held several important leadership positions, including his current role as director and vice chair of the American Board of Surgery.
Ashley is a graduate of Oberlin College and Cornell University Medical College. He completed a residency in general surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, where he subsequently joined the faculty. He then spent seven years at the University of California at Los Angeles, before coming to BWH in 1997.
“Like Dr. Ashley, Dr. Britton is a leader who upholds the highest standard of personal integrity,” Nabel said. “With a wealth of experience in clinical operations, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to quality improvement and mentoring the next generation of physicians.”
Britton currently serves as vice president of Professional Services and associate chief of Medicine at Faulkner Hospital, as well as a vice chair of Medicine at BWH. He remains clinically active as a hospitalist at both BWH and Faulkner.
A graduate of the City College of New York, Britton completed his medical degree at New Jersey Medical School and did his Internal Medicine training at BWH. He was the first associate director of the Office of Minority Career Development at BWH, prior to the creation of the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. He left BWH to serve as medical director of Horizon Healthcare of New York, and returned two years later as a Deland Fellow.
